WHMIS 1988 Training
WHMIS was originally referred to as WHMIS from when it was introduced in 1988 until 2015 when new regulations were introduced in Canada. These new regulations created two versions of WHMIS. The old or original version is referred to as WHMIS 1988. The new version of WHMIS in Canada became WHMIS 2015. This makes sense and helps Employers to meet their requirements for educating and training the people in their workplace.
In June 2015, a new version of WHMIS was released. This version is designed around the regulations introduced by the Federal Government which included revisions to WHMIS to be more compatible with the version of WHMIS used by many suppliers of WHMIS products to Canadian workplaces. These revisions are part of a Global Harmonized System or GHS for WHMIS. The changes to the WHMIS program were extensive. The system for Classifications, use of symbols and labelling were revised in the WHMIS 2015 regulations.
Q. Does the WHMIS 2015 course include training on WHMIS 1988?
A. Yes, the WHMIS 2015 course includes 3 modules dedicated to educating workers on the WHMIS 1988 regulations. This includes understanding the WHMIS classification system, classes of hazards including the symbols used, and how to read and understand WHMIS labels including the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
Q. Will there be a point where I don't have to train my employees on WHMIS 1988?
A. In theory when there are no hazardous products in a workplace that are labelled using the WHMIS 1988 regulations there may be no need to educate workers on those regulations. The focus of WHMIS training could be on the WHMIS 2015 regulations only and not both sets of information.
